# How Long Does It Take to Get a C-10 License? The Deadlines the Law Sets

CSLB says its processing times change continually, so no one can promise weeks. The law does set the deadlines: 18 months to pass the exams, 21 days between attempts, 90 days to pay the license fee and file the bond (B&P 7074).

## Key points

- CSLB says application processing times continually change, so nobody can honestly promise a number of weeks.
- You have 18 months from the day your application is accepted to pass both exams (B&P Code section 7074).
- If you fail an exam, you wait 21 calendar days before you can retake it.
- A rejected application must be returned within 90 days, or it becomes void.
- After you pass, you have 90 days from CSLB's notice to pay the initial license fee and file the bond.

How long it takes to get a C-10 license depends mostly on two things: how long CSLB takes to process your application, which CSLB itself says continually changes, and how fast you pass both exams. The law sets the hard limits around those: you have 18 months from the day your application is accepted to pass the exams, at least 21 calendar days between attempts if you fail, and 90 days after CSLB's notice to pay the initial license fee and file your bond. Miss any of those and the application is void.

Nobody can honestly promise you a number of weeks. What you can control is the part in the middle: being ready to pass both exams the first time you sit them.

## The stages, in order

### CSLB reviews your application

CSLB says processing times continually change because of the many factors (type of application, workload, staff vacancies) that affect how long it takes. You can check where yours stands on CSLB's website (search: application status) or through its automated phone system, using your PIN and application fee number.

If CSLB finds the application incomplete and rejects it, you have to return it within 90 days from the date of the original notice or rejection, or the application becomes void. A complete, accurate application is the cheapest time you will ever save.

### You get the Notice to Schedule an Examination

After CSLB reviews and accepts your application, you receive a Notice to Schedule an Examination. From then on you schedule directly with PSI, online or by phone, at a date, time and location that suits you.

The 18-month clock is already running at this point: an application becomes void if you fail to achieve a passing grade within 18 months after it has been deemed acceptable by the board.

### You take both exams

You get 3½ hours for each exam, and you can schedule them on the same day or at different times. Test results are shared before you leave the test center.

If you fail one, you can retake it after 21 calendar days, as long as you are not past your 18-month void date. Exam results are good for five years, so you only retake the one you failed.

### CSLB finishes processing

Once you pass, CSLB completes its processing of the application, and staff take a more detailed look at it before issuing the license. A randomly selected percentage of applications also go through additional investigation of work experience claims; if yours is one, CSLB cannot issue the license until that is complete, even if you have passed the exams.

### You pay the license fee and file the bond

Candidates who pass receive a Bond and Fee letter. The law gives you 90 days from the date of the notice to pay the initial license fee ($200 for a sole owner) and 90 days to file the bond. Miss either and the application is void. The registrar must notify you within 15 days after approval of the application that a license may be issued on payment of the initial license fee.

## If something outside your control happens

The void date may be extended up to 90 days, or one exam rescheduled without a fee, if you can document that the delay was due to a medical emergency or other circumstance beyond your control.

## Where you can save time

- **File a complete application.** An incomplete one comes back, and you lose the time it takes to fix and return it.
- **Have your experience proof ready.** If your application is picked for extra review of work experience, your license waits until it clears.
- **Study while you wait for the notice.** Processing time is dead time unless you use it. Pass both exams on the first attempt and you never spend a 21-day wait.
- **Line up your bond before you pass.** You have 90 days after the notice, but you do not need to use them.

The full course is $148.75 one time: lessons for both exams, practice questions with written explanations, and timed practice exams, in English and Spanish. [See what is included](/pricing).

## Questions and answers

### How long does CSLB take to process a C-10 application?

CSLB does not give a fixed time. It says processing times continually change because of factors like the type of application, workload and staff vacancies. Check your application's status on CSLB's website or automated phone system.

### How long do I have to pass the C-10 exams?

18 months from the day CSLB accepts your application. If you have not passed by then, the application is void.

### How soon do I get my exam results?

At the test center. CSLB says test results are shared before you leave.

### How long do I have to pay the license fee after I pass?

90 days from the date of CSLB's notice, and the same 90 days to file your bond. Missing either voids the application.

### Can the 18-month deadline be extended?

Only in limited cases. The void date may be extended up to 90 days if you can document that the delay was caused by a medical emergency or other circumstance beyond your control.
