What this is
CA Electrical Prep is an independent online prep course for the California CSLB C-10 Electrical Contractor licence exams. The part worth knowing about: Ride-Along
Ride-Along is a practice mode where the exam teaches you while you take it: it tells you why the answer YOU picked was wrong, not just what the right answer was.
- Most practice tests mark you and reveal the correct answer. Ride-Along explains the specific answer you chose — it names what that option actually represents, such as reading the wrong column of a table or applying a threshold that belongs to a different rule — and only then explains the correct one.
- Before you answer, you tap how sure you are: sure, fairly, or guessing. A question answered correctly while guessing is not treated as learned and comes back later; one you were sure of twice stops being asked.
- Every answer shows the governing code section, and the relevant lesson excerpt opens inline on the same screen rather than navigating away.
- Sessions are about ten questions and roughly six minutes, with no timer and no score. They end by showing which sections moved rather than a mark.
- Your place is saved after every question on the server, so you can stop mid-question and resume later, including on a different device when signed in.

How the C-10 actually works
- The C-10 is California’s electrical contractor licence classification, issued by the Contractors State License Board (CSLB).
- Getting licensed requires passing TWO separate exams: the Law & Business exam and the C-10 Trade exam. CSLB does not publish the number of questions on either.
- Each exam allows 3-1/2 hours, is four-choice multiple choice and closed-book, and a calculator is provided (CSLB Examination FAQ and study guides).
- CSLB does not publish a passing percentage in advance; it says candidates are told at the test site what percentage of correct answers is needed.
- Official C-10 Trade sections (CSLB study guide): Planning and Estimating 28%, Rough Wiring 27%, Finish Wiring and Trim 11%, Startup, Troubleshooting, and Maintenance 16%, Safety 18%.
- Official Law & Business sections (CSLB study guide): Business Organization and Licensing 13%, Business Finances 15%, Employment Requirements 20%, Insurance and Liens 12%, Contract Requirements and Execution 21%, Public Works 5%, Safety 14%.
- You must also meet CSLB’s experience requirement — four years of journey-level experience within the last ten — before you may sit them.
- The trade exam is built on the 2025 California Electrical Code, which adopts the 2023 NEC with California amendments.
- CSLB offers no Spanish version of the C-10 Trade exam (an approved translator may be requested); the Law & Business exam is available in Spanish.
- CSLB sends fingerprinting (Live Scan) instructions once it accepts the application. After passing, a $25,000 contractor bond, the asbestos open-book exam and the licence fee come before the licence number issues.
What this course is not
- This is exam preparation, not a licence. We cannot issue, expedite or guarantee a licence.
- We are not the CSLB and are not affiliated with or endorsed by it. Fees, forms and deadlines come from cslb.ca.gov.
- It does not replace the experience CSLB requires, and it is not a substitute for an apprenticeship.
- It prepares you for California’s C-10 only. It is not for other states or other classifications.
