C-10 Exam Pass Rate: What Percentage Actually Pass?
Let me start with the part nobody else will tell you straight: the Contractors State License Board does not publish a pass rate for the C-10 Electrical Contractor exam. Not on cslb.ca.gov, not in the candidate handbook, not in a downloadable statistics table.
So when you land on a page that says "only 38 percent pass the C-10 on the first try," that number came from somewhere other than CSLB. Usually it is a figure borrowed from a different state, a different trade, or a school that wanted a scary statistic in its sales copy.
That is frustrating if you were hoping for a clean number. But the number was never the useful part anyway. What is useful is understanding why this exam separates people, and which side of that line you are standing on right now.
Why CSLB does not release a per-classification figure
A few structural reasons, none of them sinister.
CSLB administers exams across dozens of license classifications. Each classification has its own exam, its own occupational analysis, and its own candidate pool, and some of those pools are small. Publishing pass rates per classification invites people to shop for the "easy" license rather than the one that matches their trade.
More importantly, CSLB exams are criterion-referenced. The passing standard is set against a defined level of minimum competence for the trade, established by working contractors, not by curving results against everyone else who tested that week. There is no fixed quota of passers. In principle every candidate in the room could pass, or none could. That is exactly why a pass rate is a weak signal about the exam and a strong signal about who happened to show up unprepared.
You also do not receive a numeric score when you pass. Results are reported as pass or fail. Candidates who fail typically get a breakdown of how they performed by subject area, which is genuinely useful for a retake. What can honestly be said about difficulty
Here is the part that holds up without inventing data.
Across trade licensing exams of this general shape — closed-book, calculation-heavy, paired with a separate business law exam — it is common for something close to half of first-time candidates to fail at least one of the two sittings. That is a pattern from the trade licensing world broadly, not a CSLB statistic about the C-10, and I am labeling it that way on purpose.

Where candidates actually lose the exam

Calculation topics. Load calculations, conductor ampacity with derating, box and conduit fill, voltage drop, motor and transformer sizing. These are the questions that eat clock time. A candidate who has to reason through each one from scratch runs out of minutes, then guesses on the last block of questions. The half of the material you never touch on the job. A journeyman who has pulled wire for fifteen years may have never written a change order, filed a preliminary notice, or classified a worker for comp purposes. - They made the math mechanical. Passers do not derive a load calculation on exam day. They have run the same procedure enough times that the setup is automatic and only the numbers change.

Those are answerable questions, and the way you answer them is by sitting down with a block of timed practice questions and seeing what your score actually looks like when the clock is running. That number — your number — is the only statistic about this exam that has ever mattered.
