How Hard Is the C-10 Exam? An Honest Look
The short answer: it's beatable, but it's wide
The C-10 has a reputation for being tough, and that reputation is half earned. The questions aren't tricky brain-teasers. What makes it hard is the ground it covers, the clock running the whole time, and the fact that it asks you about two very different worlds: the electrical work you already do, and the contracting business you may have never studied.

What actually makes the trade exam tough
The calculations
This is where most trade-exam points are won or lost. Dwelling load calcs, conductor sizing, voltage drop, motor and transformer math. None of it is calculus, but each problem runs three or four steps, and one wrong lookup sinks the whole answer.
Take a standard dwelling load calc. You've got general lighting at 3 VA per square foot, two small-appliance circuits, laundry, then the larger of nameplate or the demand factors on the range, and finally the optional method under 220.82 if the question lets you use it. Miss the demand factor and your service size is wrong even though every other step was clean.
Conductor sizing is the same story. You're reading Table 310.16, correcting for ambient temperature and for more than three current-carrying conductors in a raceway, then checking the terminal temperature rating. The way to beat calc questions isn't memorizing answers. Build one repeatable method per calc type and run it the same way every single time. When the steps are automatic, the clock stops being your enemy.
Grounding and bonding
If there's one concept that trips up experienced electricians, it's the difference between grounding and bonding. The words get used loosely in the field, so people show up thinking they know it cold, then the exam asks something precise about the grounding electrode conductor versus the equipment grounding conductor and the wording all blurs together.
Grounding connects the system to earth. Bonding connects metal parts together so they stay at the same potential and give fault current a low-impedance path back to the source. Article 250 is dense, and the exam mines it hard. Learn only the labels and you'll get baited. Overcurrent, conduit fill, and the "easy" questions
Overcurrent protection, conduit fill, box fill, and GFCI/AFCI placement feel like gimmes until you rush them. These are table-and-rule questions. The failure mode isn't ignorance, it's speed. People skim the question, grab the first plausible number, and move on. The part nobody warns you about: Law and Business
Here's the trap. You spend all your prep on electrical theory because that's the part that feels like a "real" exam, and you barely glance at the Law and Business material. Then you sit down and get hit with questions on contracts, mechanics liens, workers' comp, prevailing wage, licensing rules, and basic bookkeeping.
None of that is intuitive if you've spent your career pulling wire instead of running a company. It's a genuine second subject, and you have to study it like one. The good news: it's very learnable because it's rule-based, not math-based. There are right answers to lock in about notice deadlines, bond requirements, and who can do what under a license. So how hard is it, really?
Hard enough that you can't wing it, not so hard that a prepared person should fear it. The people who fail almost always land in one of three buckets: they ran out of time on the calc questions, they never truly learned grounding and bonding, or they ignored Law and Business until exam week. Every one of those is a preparation problem, not an intelligence problem.
Fix your prep and the difficulty drops fast. Build a study plan that covers both exams, drill calculations until the method is automatic, and take timed practice so the clock feels normal on test day.
