C-10 Practice Questions: How to Use Them to Actually Pass

Most people study for the C-10 the way they studied in high school: read the chapter, highlight the important parts, read it again. It feels productive. It's also close to the least effective thing you can do with your time. The research on memory is blunt about this. Pulling an answer out of your head is what makes it stick, not stuffing information in. That's the whole case for practice questions, and it's why they belong at the center of your prep, not as a warm-up the night before.

Why answering beats re-reading

A single-family dwelling has a total calculated load of 100 amperes at 240 volts. Using the standard calculation method, what is the minimum size ungrounded (hot) copper service conductor permitted?

The lazy move is to guess, check the letter, and move on. The right move: this is a service conductor sizing problem, so you know two things instantly. You're headed for the conductor tables, and there's a special allowance for dwelling services. Under conductor ampacity and sizing rules, 120/240V single-phase dwelling services get their own table, 310.12, instead of the general Table 310.16. For a 100A dwelling service, 310.12 lands you on 4 AWG copper. Default to the 75°C column of Table 310.16 and you'd have reached for 3 AWG and blown it.

See what happened? The value of the question wasn't the answer "4 AWG." It was catching the trap, that dwelling services have their own sizing path. That's a mistake you now never make again, and you only learned it because you traced why, not what. Do that for every miss. Write down the section, write down the trap, move on. By exam day you'll have a personal catalog of every way the test tried to fool you.

Folding in spaced repetition

Getting a question right today doesn't mean you'll get it right in three weeks. Memory fades on a predictable curve, and the fix is to revisit material right as it's about to slip. Not before, which wastes time, and not after, which means relearning from scratch.

Keep a "missed" list and re-test those questions on a widening schedule:

  • Day 1: miss it, learn it
  • Day 3: re-test it
  • Day 7: re-test it again
  • Then weekly until it's automatic

Every time you nail it, the interval stretches. Every time you blow it, the interval resets to short.
