GFCI and AFCI Requirements for the C-10 Exam

The 6-foot-from-a-sink rule catches a lot of people. It's measured from the outside edge of the sink bowl, and it reaches receptacles you might not think of as "kitchen" outlets — a receptacle on a wet-bar wall, for instance.

A couple of 2023 additions show up on newer exams. GFCI protection now reaches certain 250V receptacles — think ranges and dryers on the appropriate circuits — and 210.8(D) requires GFCI protection for the branch circuit or outlet supplying specific appliances like dishwashers. If a question mentions a hardwired dishwasher and asks about protection, that's your cue.

AFCI: the branch circuit feeding living space (210.12)

Section 210.12 flips the logic. Instead of a location near water, AFCI is about the circuit serving finished living areas. For dwelling units, all 120-volt, single-phase, 15- and 20-ampere branch circuits supplying outlets or devices in these rooms need arc-fault protection: kitchens, family rooms, dining rooms, living rooms, parlors, libraries, dens, bedrooms, sunrooms, recreation rooms, closets, hallways, laundry areas, and similar spaces.

The mnemonic that sticks: AFCI covers nearly every habitable room in a house. The short list of what's not on it — bathrooms, garages, unfinished basements, outdoors — lines up closely with where GFCI takes over. That overlap is the whole game. Some locations, like a laundry area or a kitchen, can require both, which is exactly why dual-function and combination devices exist.

Note the word "outlets," not "receptacles." An outlet is any point where current is taken to supply utilization equipment — that includes lighting outlets and smoke detectors, not just wall plugs. So an AFCI-required circuit protects the lights and the hardwired smoke alarm on that circuit too. It's not on the AFCI room list, so AFCI isn't required there. Pick GFCI-only and move on. Reverse it — a bedroom receptacle — and now AFCI is the answer, with no GFCI mandate unless water enters the picture.
