How Long Should You Study for the C-10 Exam?
The honest answer is that "how long" depends almost entirely on where you are starting, and the people who get burned are the ones who copy someone else's timeline instead of their own.
I have seen a 20-year journeyman fail because he assumed field experience would carry him. I have also seen a guy who had been out of the trade for six years pass on the first attempt because he built a real schedule and stuck to it for three months. Experience helps. It is not the same thing as being ready.
Start by figuring out which candidate you are
Be blunt with yourself here. There are roughly four starting points, and each one has a different realistic runway.

Those are ranges, not promises. Two people in the same row can land three weeks apart depending on how disciplined the sessions are.
The single biggest predictor is not years on the tools. It is how fast you can find an answer in the code book under time pressure. That is a separate skill from wiring a building correctly, and most working electricians have never had to practice it. Why the seasoned journeyman still needs weeks, not days
Field experience gets you three things: you understand what the rules are protecting against, you recognize the vocabulary, and you have physical intuition for what a correct install looks like. All valuable.
What it does not give you:
- Book navigation speed. In the field you look things up once and move on. On the exam you are doing it under a clock, repeatedly, across topics you may not touch in your day-to-day work.
- Breadth outside your niche. If you have spent eight years on commercial tenant improvements, the residential service calculations and the motor and transformer material will feel foreign. The exam does not care what you specialize in - see what is actually on the C-10 exam for the scope.

A seasoned journeyman on a real schedule is usually looking at four to six weeks. That is not cramming - that is roughly 30 to 50 focused hours. The reason it works for them is that they are refreshing and organizing knowledge, not building it.
Why "out of the field" means the long end
If you have been away, your problem is not that you forgot the concepts. It is that the retrieval is slow and the math is rusty. Rusty math plus a clock is how people run out of time with 15 questions unanswered.
Plan on 12 to 16 weeks and structure it in phases:
- Weeks 1-3: rebuild the fundamentals. Ohm's law, single-phase and three-phase power, conductor properties. No practice exams yet - you will just demoralize yourself.
- Weeks 4-9: work the calculation topics one at a time. Load calculations, conductor ampacity and sizing, conduit and box fill, overcurrent protection, voltage drop. One topic per week, worked to the point where you can do a problem without looking at your notes.
- Weeks 10-13: mixed timed practice. Full-length, timed, no notes beyond what you are actually allowed to bring.
- Weeks 14-16: buffer. Weak areas, the Law and Business block, and a week of light review before the test date.
The buffer is not optional. Everyone loses two weeks somewhere to a job that runs long or a family thing.
The signals that you are actually ready
Feeling ready is not a signal. Here is what is:
- Three or more full-length timed mocks comfortably above passing, on questions you have not seen before. One good score is variance. Three is a trend. Confirm the current passing standard and time limit with the CSLB at cslb.ca.gov - exam specifications change and you want the number from the source, not from a forum post.
- You finish with time left over. If you are using every minute, you are not ready - you are gambling that the real exam is not harder than the mock.
- You can explain why the wrong answers are wrong. On calculation questions, the distractors are usually the result of a specific mistake: skipping a derating factor, using the wrong column, forgetting a continuous-load multiplier. If you can name the mistake, you own the topic.

Why cramming fails specifically on calculations
Rules and definitions survive short-term memorization reasonably well. You can read a chapter on Friday and recall it Saturday.
Calculations do not work that way. A load calculation is a procedure - a sequence of decisions where each step depends on getting the previous one right. Procedures move into long-term memory through spaced repetition, not volume. Doing 40 problems in one sitting produces a lot of correct answers and very little retention, because by problem 15 you are pattern-matching the format rather than reasoning through it.
Doing 8 problems a day for five days beats 40 in one night, every time. The same is true for code lookups: the speed only comes from repeated retrieval spread over weeks.

A simple rule for picking your date
Do not book the exam until you have completed one full-length timed mock. Take it cold, early, before you feel ready. Whatever your score is, it tells you which row of that table you are in - and that number is worth more than any estimate you can make from the outside.
Then work backwards: your gap to passing, divided by the hours you can honestly commit each week, plus two weeks of buffer.
None of this requires a course. It requires a schedule you keep. That said, the thing that most reliably moves a score is working timed questions in the same conditions you will face on test day, over and over, until the clock stops being the thing you are fighting.
