Required Lighting Outlets in Dwellings (210.70)

The code doesn't just say "put in lights" — it specifies where a switch-controlled lighting outlet is mandatory. This is a classic finish-stage checklist.

1. Habitable rooms, kitchens, laundry, bathrooms — 210.70(A)(1)

At least one wall-switch-controlled lighting outlet is required in every habitable room, kitchen, laundry area, and bathroom. (The 2023 edition added laundry areas to this list.)

Exception: in rooms other than kitchens, laundry areas, and bathrooms, a switch-controlled receptacle may substitute for the fixed lighting outlet (think: a bedroom with a switched lamp outlet). Kitchens, laundry areas, and bathrooms always need an actual lighting outlet.

2. Hallways, stairways, garages, outdoor entrances — 210.70(A)(2)

A wall-switch-controlled lighting outlet is required at:

• hallways, stairways, attached garages, and detached garages with electric power;
• outdoor entrances/exits with grade-level access.
