Harassment Training, Heat Illness, Apprenticeship, and New-Hire Reporting

The employer-administrative duties that round out California's employment rules — training, outdoor heat safety, apprenticeship on public jobs, and reporting who you hire.

1. Sexual harassment prevention training (SB 1343)

Employers with 5 or more employees must provide sexual harassment prevention training:

  • 2 hours for supervisors, 1 hour for non-supervisors,
  • every 2 years (and to new hires within their first months). (Gov. Code §12950.1)

2. Heat Illness Prevention (Title 8 §3395)

For outdoor work, when the temperature exceeds 80°F, the employer must provide and maintain shade. Employees may take a preventative cool-down rest in the shade — at least 5 minutes — whenever they feel the need. Employers must also provide fresh water and a written heat-illness plan.
